The 450mm wide black towel rail is the smart choice when you have the wall space and need proper towel capacity. One step up from the standard 400mm, this width lets you hang two full-size towels without cramping, while matt black hides limescale, soap residue and water marks far better than polished chrome—meaning you clean less often and your bathroom always looks fresh.
Why 450mm suits modern en-suites and utility rooms
- En-suites with generous wall space: Most modern homes have en-suites 2m+ wide. A 450mm rail uses that space intelligently, giving you room for guest towels without the oversized look of a 600mm+ unit.
- Utility room showers: If you've got a shower cubicle or wetroom area in a utility space, 450mm is wide enough to handle a hand towel, bath sheet, and gym towel rotation without bunching.
- Secondary bathrooms: The sweet spot for family homes—not cramped like 400mm, not warehouse-sized like 600mm. Perfect proportions for rooms 3m–3.5m wide.
Pipe centres and wall space
All our 450mm ladder rails have pipe centres at 400mm (measured between the centre of the two vertical bars). This is a industry-standard spacing that works with all standard British heating pipework. You'll need a minimum wall width of 650mm to fit the rail comfortably—this accounts for the 90–110mm projection from the wall and safe clearance from corners or fixtures. Check your wall with a tape measure before ordering; if you're tight on space, drop down to 400mm wide instead.
Matt black finish and care
Matt black is not chrome. The fine, non-reflective texture absorbs light, which means water spots, limescale and soap residue become nearly invisible compared to a polished finish. This is why hotels and high-spec bathrooms favour it—lower perceived maintenance, not zero maintenance. You'll still need to wipe it occasionally with a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleaner (Viakal or similar), but the intervals are longer and cleaning is faster because grime is genuinely harder to see. Matt black pairs beautifully with modern tap sets, black-framed mirrors, and slate-effect tiles, and it's fully compatible with white or anthracite fittings too.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Will matt black show scratches? Light surface marks are rare because the finish doesn't reflect. If scratches do occur (typically from careless packing or fitting), touch-up paint pens work, but in practice, daily use of a soft cloth keeps them invisible. Our towel rails ship with felt pads on brackets to prevent wall contact marks.
- Can I use a 450mm rail in a smaller bathroom if I remove one vertical bar? No—the pipe centre distance is engineered into the design, and removing a bar compromises water flow, structural integrity and warranty. If your bathroom is under 650mm wide, choose our 400mm range instead; we have 15+ styles in black.
