🔥 Why Heat Pumps Need Different Radiators
Heat pumps run at 35-55°C vs gas boilers at 60-80°C. You need radiators with higher output at lower temps - typically 1.5-2x larger or aluminium for faster response.
📊 Understanding ΔT Ratings
ΔT50 (Traditional Boilers)
70°C flow - Not for heat pumps
ΔT30 (Heat Pump Ready) ✓
50°C flow - Use this for sizing
💡 ΔT50 BTU × 0.5 = Heat pump output

❓ Heat Pump Radiator FAQs
Can I use my existing radiators with a heat pump?
Sometimes yes, but they may need to be larger. Heat pumps run at lower temperatures (35-55°C vs 70-80°C for boilers), so existing radiators often provide only 50% of their rated output. You may need to upgrade to larger radiators or add additional ones.
What is ΔT30 and why does it matter?
ΔT30 (Delta T 30) is a heat output rating measured at lower flow temperatures typical of heat pumps. Standard ΔT50 ratings assume 70°C water - unrealistic for heat pumps. Always use ΔT30 ratings when sizing radiators for heat pump systems.
Are aluminium radiators better for heat pumps?
Yes! Aluminium heats up 5x faster than steel, has lower water content, and responds quickly to temperature changes. This makes aluminium radiators ideal for heat pump systems which cycle on/off more frequently than boilers.
How do I calculate what size radiator I need?
Calculate room heat loss (BTU) based on room size, insulation, and windows. For heat pumps, use ΔT30 ratings. As a rough guide: 150-200 BTU per m² for well-insulated rooms. Use our BTU calculator or contact us for a free sizing consultation.
Do I need to change all my radiators?
Not necessarily. Start by calculating heat loss for each room and comparing with your existing radiators' ΔT30 output. Rooms with undersized radiators will need upgrading. Our team can help assess which radiators need replacing.
What flow temperature should I set my heat pump to?
Most heat pumps work best at 35-45°C for maximum efficiency. Higher temperatures (up to 55°C) are possible but reduce efficiency. Size your radiators for 45°C flow to balance comfort and running costs.
