400mm Wide Electric Towel Rails
Welcome to the sweet spot of bathroom heating. Our 400mm wide electric towel rails officially mark the transition into standard family bathroom sizes. Measuring 40cm across, these highly popular models offer substantial room for hanging full-sized bath towels while still remaining compact enough to fit comfortably on most standard bathroom walls. Functioning entirely on mains electricity, these standalone radiators provide dedicated drying power 365 days a year, meaning you no longer have to rely on firing up your main central heating system just to dry your family's towels.

Select Your Ideal Heating Element
Power your 40cm towel rail with an electrical element designed for your specific needs:
- Standard & LST Elements: Our standard single-heat elements offer reliable, constant warmth. Alternatively, choose a Low Surface Temperature (LST) element to safely limit the rail's maximum heat, perfect for care homes or family bathrooms.
- Thermostatic Elements: Enhance your energy efficiency by gaining manual control over the exact surface temperature of the radiator.
- WiFi Smart Elements: Connect to your home network for complete smartphone control, allowing you to create custom heating schedules so your towels are warm precisely when you need them.
Mandatory Wiring Accessories
To comply with UK building and bathroom regulations, this electric rail must be hardwired by a Part P qualified electrician.
- Fused Spurs: Required to safely and permanently wire the element into your mains electrical circuit.
- Wall Timers & Boosters: Highly recommended for standard elements, these wall controllers allow you to activate stepped heating cycles (from 1 to 5 hours), ensuring the rail never wastes electricity by running all day.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much actual hanging space is there on a 400mm towel rail?
The total external width of the unit is 400mm. Subtracting the 80mm footprint of the vertical upright bars gives you a highly generous internal horizontal hanging space of 320mm. This allows you to comfortably hang standard bath towels folded in half. If 320mm feels tight, the 450mm option gives 370mm — or step down to 350mm if wall width is the constraint.
What size gap on my wall do I need to mount this?
Because the physical rail is 400mm wide, you need to ensure you have enough flat wall space for both the mounting brackets and the extra clearance required to slide towels on and off the edges. We recommend allowing an overall wall gap of around 500mm for a clean, hassle-free installation.
Can the heating element be installed on either side of the towel rail?
Yes, the electrical heating element is fully reversible and can be fitted into either the left or the right-hand side of the radiator to suit the location of your fused spur. However, the element must always be installed at the bottom of the towel rail. Installing it at the top will bypass the built-in overheat protection and is extremely dangerous.
What are the IP ratings for your electric towel rails?
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is entirely dependent on the type of electrical element you install. Our standard on/off heating elements feature a robust IPX6 rating. Our thermostatic and WiFi-controlled elements carry an IPX4 rating. Both options are completely safe and fully compliant for bathroom installations.
How can I hang large bath sheets on a 400mm rail?
While the 320mm internal gap is excellent for standard towels, oversized bath sheets can still be a bit bulky to squeeze through the bars. To make drying heavy robes and bath sheets effortless, we recommend purchasing our Towel Rail Pegs. Available in Chrome, White, and Black to match your rail perfectly, they snap securely between the horizontal bars so you can drape large items directly off the front.
