Not all bathrooms fit standard widths. If your alcove, recess, or chimney breast is too narrow for 400mm but needs more than 300mm, our 350mm electric towel rails are engineered for exactly that in-between space. Electric means you're not constrained by plumbing position—just power and wall space.
Why 350mm suits recessed and alcove bathrooms
- Alcove and recess fit. Standard 400mm rails don't fit; 300mm looks awkward in wider spaces. 350mm fills the awkward gap perfectly, especially in period properties with irregular wall layouts or modern ensuite shower recesses.
- Chimney breast spaces. Many UK homes have redundant chimney breasts. A 350mm rail fits neatly into the breast without overshooting into the room, ideal for compact bathrooms where every centimetre matters.
- No plumbing dependency. Electric rails need only a nearby socket and a fused spur. Alcoves with no hot water pipes nearby? No problem. Install exactly where the space suits you, not where pipes run.
Pipe centres and wall space
350mm electric towel rails have pipe centres of 300mm (width minus 50mm, standard across all our ladder rails). Allow minimum wall clearance of 550mm height to accommodate mounting brackets and safe access. Projection is typically 90–110mm from the wall, so check your space depth before ordering. All installations require a qualified electrician—Part P Building Regulations compliance is mandatory for bathroom electrical work.
Wattage and running costs
350mm models range from 150W to 250W depending on height and finish. Running costs are modest: at 24.67p per kilowatt-hour and a typical 2-hour daily timer, expect £2–£4 per month. All our electric models are IP44 rated, suitable for bathroom zones. Unlike heated towel rails that serve only drying, electric rails heat the room efficiently while drying towels—dual purpose, single appliance.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I fit a 350mm rail into a 360mm alcove? Yes, but only if your wall brackets allow the depth. Mount brackets at the very back of the alcove to gain 5–10mm clearance. If projection is 100mm, you'll have roughly 260mm of usable alcove depth left. Always measure your recess depth (wall to front edge) before confirming.
- Do I need a licensed electrician? Yes. Part P Building Regulations require all bathroom electric heating to be certified by a qualified electrician or registered installer. We provide clear wiring diagrams, and most electricians charge £80–£150 for a towel rail install. It's non-negotiable and protects your safety and insurance.
