A 1000mm wide electric towel rail sits at the larger end of the standard size range, and that extra width changes what a bathroom can do. Where a 500mm or 600mm rail handles one or two towels, a 1000mm rail gives a master bathroom, family bathroom, or large en-suite the capacity to warm four to six full-size bath towels at once — without a single pipe connection.

Why choose electric at 1000mm?

At this width, you are usually dealing with a room that has the wall space to match. Electric makes sense here for two reasons: first, you are not committed to fitting it into your central heating circuit or near existing pipework — the rail can go exactly where you want it on the wall. Second, you can run it independently of your boiler, so it works through summer months when the heating is off, or in a bathroom that is not on the main heating system.

All rails in this collection are pre-filled with heat transfer fluid and sealed at the factory. There is no maintenance, no bleeding, and no antifreeze to top up. You either plug them into a fused spur or hardwire them to a switched fused connection unit (FCU) — either way, a qualified electrician can install one in under an hour.

Which rooms suit a 1000mm rail?

  • Master en-suite: If your en-suite is large enough to carry a 1000mm rail on the main wall, it becomes a feature rather than just a functional addition. Chrome and anthracite finishes work particularly well in modern fitted bathrooms.
  • Main family bathroom: With multiple users sharing the space, the capacity matters. A 1000mm rail running on a timer means warm towels are ready when they are needed, not half an hour after someone remembered to switch it on.
  • Utility or boot room with shower: Where wall space is generous and you want drying capacity without plumbing, a pre-filled electric rail at this width is one of the most practical solutions available.

Pipe centres and wall space

The pipe centres on a 1000mm wide ladder towel rail sit at 950mm apart. Allow at least 100mm clearance either side of the rail for comfortable access, so plan for a minimum wall width of 1200mm for a flush, proportionate fit. Standard projection from the wall is 90-110mm depending on the model.

Wattage and running costs

Rails in this size range typically run between 600W and 800W. At the current rate of 24.67p/kWh, an 800W rail running for two hours per day costs approximately 39p. On a timer — which is how most customers run them — monthly costs land between £8 and £14 depending on usage pattern and wattage.

Finishes available

Chrome remains the default choice for bathrooms where fittings are mixed metal, and it suits both traditional and contemporary spaces. Matt black and anthracite are better suited to rooms with brushed or matte hardware throughout. All finishes in this collection carry a 5-year warranty.

Installation notes

  • Electrical connection must be made by a competent person (Part P registered for domestic work in England and Wales)
  • Suitable for bathroom zones 2 and outside — these rails are IP44 rated
  • Not suitable for zone 1 (directly above or within the bath)
  • Wall fixings supplied; use appropriate wall plugs for your wall type

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plug a 1000mm electric towel rail into a standard socket?
Only if the socket is outside the bathroom zones and at least 3m from the bath or shower. In most bathrooms the socket is not close enough, so a fused spur or FCU is the correct installation method.

Do I need a programmer or timer?
The rails themselves do not have built-in timers, but you can fit an inline timer on the FCU or use a smart plug if the installation permits. We recommend pairing with a 24-hour timer to avoid running costs from rails left on all day.

How long does delivery take?
In-stock rails are dispatched within 1-2 working days. Free delivery applies to orders over £200.
