Electric towel rails with a thermostat: warm, dry towels all year round

There's nothing like stepping out of the shower into a warm, dry towel — and you don't need the boiler running to get it. Our thermostatic electric towel rails heat independently of your central heating, working all year round. Every rail sits in our Coventry warehouse (CV7 9NH), in UK stock, ready for same-day or next-day delivery on our own fleet.

Why choose a thermostatic electric towel rail?

The thermostat is the bit that makes the whole thing worth having. Without it, a rail is on or off — full heat or nothing. With one, you set a temperature and the rail holds it there, cycling off when it's reached and clicking back on when it drops. You never pay for heat you didn't ask for.

There's a safety angle too. Thermostatic elements are IPX4 rated, so they're protected against splashes. And because our rails come pre-filled with thermal fluid, there's nothing to install beyond mounting — hang the rail, connect the element, done.

How to choose the right size

Size is mostly about wall space, but room type is a handy shortcut. For a cloakroom or en-suite, look at 300–500mm rails — compact, with room for a towel or two. A busy family bathroom is happiest with 600–800mm. If you've got a large bathroom and towels for the whole household, go 900mm or wider.

How much does it cost to run?

Less than most people assume. At the current UK rate of 24.67p per kWh (from 1 April 2026), a 150W thermostatic rail on 4 hours a day costs about 15p — under £5 a month. Because the thermostat cycles off at temperature, your real cost is usually lower — you're paying for gentle top-ups, not 4 hours of flat-out heat.

Finishes

Four finishes cover most bathrooms. Chrome is the classic — bright, easy to wipe down, at home in modern and traditional spaces. White is soft and clean, ideal where you want the rail to fade into the wall. Black is the bold statement against light tiles. Anthracite sits between grey and black — a warmer, subtler dark that hides fingerprints better than pure black.

Why buy from Elegant Radiators?

We've been selling towel rails from our Coventry warehouse since 2012, and we still do things the way we'd want done for us. Every rail is in UK stock and delivered same-day or next-day on our own fleet, not bounced around a courier network. Every rail carries a 5-year warranty (25 years on stainless steel and aluminium), plus trade discounts for plumbers — real stock, real people, and a phone someone actually answers.

Frequently asked questions

Do electric towel rails need a thermostat?

Not strictly, but we'd always recommend one. A thermostatic element turns the rail into a set-and-forget appliance that holds your chosen temperature and cycles off once it's reached — cheaper to run and kinder to your towels.

How much does a thermostatic electric towel rail cost to run?

A 150W rail on 4 hours a day costs about 15p at 24.67p per kWh — under £5 a month. Because the thermostat cycles off at temperature, the real figure is usually lower.

Do electric towel rails need filling?

No. Our electric towel rails come pre-filled, ready for assembly and installation.

Can I leave a thermostatic electric towel rail on all the time?

You can, and plenty of people do. The thermostat cycles the element on and off to hold temperature, so it's far more efficient than a non-thermostatic rail. Add a timer for morning warmth and off the rest of the day.

What size electric towel rail do I need?

Measure your wall first. As a guide, 300–500mm suits cloakrooms and en-suites, 600–800mm fits a family bathroom, and 900mm and above is for large bathrooms. If you ever convert to central heating or dual fuel, pipe centres work out to the rail width minus 50mm.

Do thermostatic electric towel rails need an electrician?

If you're replacing an existing rail or using a plug-in element, you can often handle it yourself. For a new hardwired installation — especially in a bathroom — we'd recommend a qualified electrician to meet Part P regulations and the element's IPX4 rating.

Find the rail that fits your wall below and order today for same-day or next-day delivery on our own fleet. Your warmest towel is about 24 hours away.
