Is the Reina Maira plug-in or does it need an electrician?

Hardwired only — not a plug-in rail. The Maira must be connected to a dedicated fused spur by a qualified electrician. In England and Wales this is a notifiable electrical work under Part P of Building Regulations and must be completed or certified by a registered competent person (for example an NICEIC, NAPIT, or SELECT registered electrician). No plumber or pipework is required.

Why does the Black finish have a higher wattage than Polished Stainless Steel?

The Black Maira uses a higher-output element: 80W for the 350x500mm size (vs 65W Polished) and 165W for the 1190x500mm size (vs 145W Polished). This is a design choice by Reina — the matt black surface emits heat slightly differently from polished stainless. In practice both output levels are more than adequate for towel warming. Dimensions, fixings, and installation are identical across both finishes.

Which size should I choose — 350x500mm or 1190x500mm?

The 350x500mm Maira is a compact accent rail — ideal for a cloakroom, en-suite, or as a secondary rail alongside a larger radiator. At 65W–80W it keeps towels warm but is not designed as a primary heat source. The 1190x500mm is the main event: at 145W–165W it provides meaningful background warmth in a small bathroom while keeping 2–3 towels on rotation. Width is 500mm for both — only the height differs.

How do the Maira timer modes work?

The Maira has five operating modes accessible via the two buttons on its integrated display. 24H Continuous: press the right button to run non-stop for 24 hours. 2H and 4H countdown: the rail runs for 2 or 4 hours then switches off automatically. A2 Automatic Cycle: runs for 2 hours, off for 2 hours, repeating. A4 Automatic Cycle: runs for 4 hours, off for 4 hours, repeating. Press the left button to cycle through 2H, 4H, A2, and A4. A flashing blue cursor confirms your selection. For a fixed daily on/off schedule, an electrician can fit a separate compliant timer on the fused spur circuit.

Can the Maira run independently of the central heating?

Yes — entirely independently. The Maira is a dry electric rail with no water inside and no connection to any heating system. Switch it on any time of year regardless of whether the boiler is running. No minimum system pressure, no seasonal shutdown, no bleed points. This makes it particularly useful in bathrooms served by combi boilers where there is no programmer for individual rooms.

What bathroom zone is the Maira suitable for?

The Maira carries an IPX4 rating — protection against water splashed from any direction. This makes it suitable for Zone 2 (60cm or more from a bath or shower edge) and most open-plan bathroom wall positions. It must not be installed in Zone 0 (inside the bath) or Zone 1 (directly over the bath or shower). The fused spur connection point must be outside the bathroom (Zone 3 or outside) — typically in an adjacent wall or airing cupboard. Your electrician will confirm the appropriate zone during installation.

Will the Maira corrode — is it genuinely stainless steel?

Yes — the Maira body is grade 304 stainless steel, not chrome-plated mild steel. Grade 304 is inherently corrosion-resistant in bathroom humidity and will not rust, peel, or pit under normal bathroom conditions. The Matt Black finish is a coating applied over the stainless body, not paint. Clean with a soft damp cloth only — avoid abrasive pads, bleach, and descaling chemicals which can damage the surface coating.
