Wattage note: Elements are available in 150W, 200W, 300W, 400W and 500W. See the size guide table above for recommendations by rail width. When in doubt, size up — a 300W element running at 60% load is quieter and longer-lasting than a 150W element running flat out.

Why Choose a Chrome Electric Towel Rail?

Chrome is the most versatile bathroom finish. It pairs with white sanitaryware, grey tiles, wood-effect flooring, and almost every bathroom tap finish available in the UK market. It reflects light, which makes smaller bathrooms feel larger — something matt black and anthracite finishes can't do.

The trade-off to know: chrome plating reflects radiant heat slightly more than dark finishes. In practical terms this means chrome rails can feel cooler to the touch at the same element wattage as a matt black rail. The difference is marginal (5–10% heat loss) and is irrelevant in most bathrooms — but if your bathroom is poorly insulated or north-facing, choose a 300W element rather than 200W.

Corrosion: our chrome rails use a nickel-undercoat chrome plating process, not decorative chrome over bare steel. This means the chrome won't pit or bubble in humid bathroom conditions over the 5-year warranty period. Wipe down occasionally with a dry cloth to prevent watermark buildup — chrome shows water spots more than other finishes.

Narrow widths: chrome is the only finish where we stock rails from 200mm wide right through to 1200mm wide. For tight en-suites, boat bathrooms, or the gap beside a shower tray, the 200mm chrome electric or 300mm chrome electric are the narrowest pre-filled electric options we carry.

Installation — What to Expect

Most chrome electric towel rails can be wall-mounted and wired in 45–90 minutes by a competent electrician. The process:

1. Mark the wall. Use a spirit level. Mark both bracket positions (bracket span = width − 130mm). Check for pipes and cables behind the wall before drilling.
2. Mount the brackets. Use the supplied wall plugs for plasterboard or solid wall as appropriate. The rail needs to be level — even 2mm out over 500mm will be visible.
3. Hang the rail. Clip onto the brackets. The rail is pre-filled — do not attempt to drain or add fluid.
4. Insert the element. Screw into the bottom entry port (1/2" BSP thread). Apply PTFE tape.
5. Wire to fused spur. The fused spur must be outside zone 1 and zone 2 (outside 60cm from bath/shower edge). Use a 3A fuse. The element flex plugs into the spur.

Bathroom zones reminder: Zone 0 = inside the bath/shower. Zone 1 = directly above. Zone 2 = 60cm from edge of bath or shower. Chrome electric towel rails with IPX4 elements can be installed in zones 2 and 3. Standard IPX6 elements are also zone 2 compliant. The fused spur timer switch must always be in zone 3 or outside the bathroom (IP20).

No. All rails in this range come pre-filled with thermal fluid — no plumbing connection required. You need a qualified electrician for the fused spur wiring, but no plumber. This is the key advantage of electric over central heating towel rails.

What wattage element do I need?

Under 4m² bathroom: 150W. Standard bathroom (4–6m²): 200–300W. Large master bathroom (6m²+): 300–500W. If in doubt, go one size up — a bigger element running at lower thermostat settings is more efficient than a small element running flat out.

Are chrome electric towel rails safe in the bathroom?

Yes. Thermostatic and WiFi elements carry IPX4 splash-proof certification, suitable for bathroom zones 2 and 3. Standard elements are IPX6. The fused spur timer switch must be outside zone 2 (more than 60cm from bath or shower edge) or outside the bathroom.
