How to Install a Heated Towel Rail: Step-by-Step UK Guide

Fitting a heated towel rail is one of those jobs that looks harder than it actually is. If you've got basic DIY skills, a decent drill, and a bit of patience, you can do this in an afternoon. This guide walks you through the whole process — whether you're fitting a plumbed rail that runs off your central heating, or an electric one that heats up independently.

Tools & Materials You'll Need

Gather everything before you start. Nothing kills momentum like realising you're missing a masonry bit halfway through.

  • Spirit level — 600mm minimum. A wonky towel rail looks terrible and it'll bother you forever.
  • Drill with masonry bits — 6mm, 7mm, or 8mm depending on your wall plugs. If you're going into tiles, you'll want a tile bit too.
  • Adjustable spanner — for valve tails and compression fittings.
  • PTFE tape — a roll costs about a quid and you'll use it on every threaded joint.
  • Pipe cutter — only if you're modifying existing copper pipework. A junior hacksaw works too, but the cutter gives you a cleaner edge.
  • Screwdrivers — both flathead and Phillips. You'll need them for bracket covers and bleed valves.
  • Pencil and tape measure — marking out is half the job.
  • Wall fixings — match these to your wall type. Masonry plugs for brick, hollow-wall anchors for plasterboard, timber screws for stud walls.
  • For electric rails: voltage tester, appropriate flex cable (check the rail's wattage), and a fused spur or flex outlet plate if you're hardwiring.

Before You Start

Do these checks now. Skip them and you'll be patching holes in your wall later.

Check Your Pipe Centres

This is the number one mistake we see. The distance between your two valve centres is the towel rail's width minus 50mm. So if you've got a 600mm wide rail, your pipe centres should be 550mm apart. Measure the rail itself — don't guess from the product listing, because bracket designs vary. If your existing pipework doesn't match, you'll need to adjust it or use adjustable valve kits.

Understand Bathroom Zones

UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) divide bathrooms into zones. Get this wrong and you're creating a serious safety hazard:

  • Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower tray. No electrical accessories here, period.
  • Zone 1: Directly above Zone 0, up to 2.25m from the floor. Only IPX6-rated non-thermostatic elements are allowed here. Most electric towel rails with built-in elements fall into this category.
  • Zone 2: The area extending 0.6m around the edges of Zone 1, and above it up to 2.25m. IPX4-rated thermostatic elements are permitted here.
  • Outside zones: Everything else. IP20 timers, controllers, and fused spurs must be installed outside all zones — usually on the wall outside the bathroom or in an adjacent cupboard.

If you're at all unsure about which zone your rail falls into, check the product's IP rating and consult an electrician.

Turn Everything Off

  • Plumbed rails: Turn off your central heating and let the system cool. Shut off the water supply — you might need to drain the system partially depending on where you're tapping in.
  • Electric rails: Isolate the circuit at your consumer unit. Use a voltage tester to confirm the supply is dead before touching any wiring. Do not skip this step.

For any electrical work in a bathroom, remember that Part P of the Building Regulations applies. If you're running a new circuit or fitting a fused spur inside a zone (which you shouldn't be — see above), you're legally required to notify building control or use a registered competent person.


Step 1 — Measure and Mark

Towel rails sit higher than standard radiators. The sweet spot is 1200–1400mm from the floor to the centre of the rail — high enough to hang a full-length towel without it dragging on the floor, low enough that it doesn't look like it's trying to escape through the ceiling.

Here's the process:

  1. Hold the rail against the wall at your chosen height. Get someone to help if it's heavy — ladder-style rails are awkward to hold solo.
  2. Use the mounting brackets attached to the rail as a template. Mark through the bracket holes with your pencil.
  3. Put the rail down. Place your spirit level across the marks and check they're dead level. If they're not, adjust and remark.
  4. Check the pipe centre distance one more time against your markings. It's worth double-checking now rather than finding out later that your valves don't line up.

Step 2 — Drill and Mount Brackets

The quality of this step determines whether your towel rail stays on the wall for the next decade.

  • Masonry walls (brick, block, concrete): Use a masonry bit sized for your wall plugs. Drill to the depth of the plug plus 5mm. Tap the plugs in flush with a hammer. Screw the brackets in firmly — they should feel solid, not spongy.
  • Plasterboard (dot-and-dab or stud wall): This is where people get into trouble. Standard wall plugs won't hold. Use hollow-wall anchors or toggle fixings rated for the weight of your rail when full of water (a 600mm rail holds about 5–7 litres). Better yet, find a stud and fix into that — use timber screws directly into the stud where possible.

Once all brackets are on the wall, lay your spirit level across them one final time. A millimetre out at the bracket becomes noticeably crooked by the time you're looking at the top of the rail. If they're off, now's the time to loosen, adjust, and retighten.


Step 3 — Connect the Valves

This is the plumbing bit. If you're replacing an existing radiator, your pipework is already there — you might just need to adjust the spacing. If it's a brand new installation, you'll be running new pipes, which is a bigger job and might be the point where you call in a pro.

For the valve connection itself:

  1. Wrap PTFE tape 3–4 times clockwise around the male thread of each valve tail. Clockwise — because if you wrap it the other way it'll unravel as you tighten.
  2. Screw each valve tail into the rail's inlet by hand until it bites, then use your adjustable spanner to tighten. You want it snug — around a quarter to half turn past hand-tight. Cranking it further risks splitting the thread inside the rail, and that's a new rail you'll be buying, not a fixable mistake.
  3. Attach your radiator valves to the tails — angled valves are the go-to for ladder rails because the pipework usually comes up from the floor or out from the wall below the rail. Tighten compression fittings with your spanner.
  4. Connect the valves to your existing pipework. If the spacing is fractionally off, adjustable valve extensions or offset connectors will save you. If it's miles out, you'll need to alter the pipework — which means cutting, soldering, or using push-fit fittings.

Step 4 — Fill, Bleed, and Test (Plumbed Rails)

The moment of truth. You're about to find out if your joints hold.

  1. Open both valves slowly — about a quarter turn at first so the rail fills gradually. You'll hear water flowing in.
  2. Go straight to the top bleed valve with your bleed key. Open it a little — trapped air will hiss out. Keep it open until water starts trickling out, then close it. If you've got a towel rail with a top rail that sits above the bleed valve, tilt the rail slightly (if the brackets allow) so the bleed point is the highest point.
  3. Check every single joint — valve tails where they enter the rail, valve compression nuts, and any pipe connections you've made. Run your finger around each one. A weep that barely shows as a droplet can become a stain on your ceiling below within a week.
  4. Open the valves fully and let the rail heat up if your boiler is running.
  5. Check your boiler pressure gauge. If it's dropped below 1 bar, top it up using your boiler's filling loop. Most combi boilers want to sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold.

Step 5 — Electrical Connection (Electric Rails)

Electric towel rails are simpler to install because there's no plumbing involved — but the electrical side demands respect.

You've got three connection options:

  • 13A plug (easiest): The rail comes with a moulded plug. You mount the rail, plug it into a nearby socket, and you're done. The downside is a visible cable running to the socket, but if the socket is behind the rail or in a cupboard below, it's barely noticeable. Remember: the socket must be outside bathroom zones.
  • Fused spur (cleanest): The rail is hardwired into a switched fused connection unit mounted on the wall — normally outside the bathroom, with the cable passing through the wall to the rail. This is the tidiest option but it means running cable and fitting the spur. You'll typically use a 3A or 5A fuse depending on the rail's wattage.
  • Flex outlet plate: Similar to a fused spur but without the switch — the rail connects directly to a flex outlet, which is fed from a switch elsewhere. This is less common but works well when you've got a controller or timer in the circuit.

Important rules for electric towel rails in bathrooms:

  • IP20 timers, controllers, and switches must not be installed in Zone 0, 1, or 2. Fit them outside the bathroom entirely — on the wall in the hallway or landing is standard practice.
  • The heating element itself must carry the right IP rating for its location: IPX6 for Zone 1, IPX4 minimum for Zone 2.
  • All electrical work in bathrooms is notifiable under Part P. If you're not using a registered electrician who can self-certify, you'll need to notify your local building control — which costs more than hiring the electrician in the first place.

If you're reading this section and thinking "I'll just have a go" — please don't. Water and electricity don't mix, and that's not a lesson you want to learn the hard way. A NICEIC or NAPIT registered electrician will typically charge £60–120 for a straightforward fused spur installation. It's money well spent.


Common Mistakes to Avoid

We've been selling towel rails since 2012 and shipping them same-day from Coventry. Here's what our customers (and occasionally our own fitters) have learned the hard way:

  • Not checking pipe centres before drilling. You'd be amazed how often this happens. Measure the rail, subtract 50mm, measure your pipes, then drill. Not the other way round.
  • Overtightening valve tails. The threads inside towel rails are brass or steel, but they'll still crack if you lean on the spanner. Snug is enough. If it leaks, you can always give it another quarter turn — you can't un-crack a thread.
  • Forgetting to bleed the rail. If your towel rail only heats up at the bottom, you've got air trapped at the top. Bleed it. It takes 30 seconds.
  • Mounting too high or too low. Below 1100mm centre height and your towels drag on the floor. Above 1500mm and it looks oddly placed unless you've got very high ceilings.
  • Using the wrong wall fixings. Plasterboard with standard wall plugs will fail — maybe not immediately, but eventually. A towel rail full of hot water is heavy. Use fixings rated for the job.
  • Skipping the PTFE tape. Threaded joints without PTFE tape or jointing compound will leak. It's a pound for a roll. Don't skip it.

When to Call a Professional

DIY is great until it isn't. Here's when you should put the tools down and pick up the phone:

  • Any work on gas boiler pipework. In the UK, it's illegal to carry out gas work unless you're Gas Safe registered. Even if you're "just" altering central heating pipes near the boiler, if it involves touching the gas supply, you need a pro.
  • Electrical work in bathroom zones. If the cable needs to run through a wall into Zone 1 or 2, or you're fitting a fused spur anywhere near the bathroom, get a NICEIC or NAPIT electrician.
  • Running a new circuit. If your consumer unit needs a new breaker and a cable run, that's not a Sunday afternoon job.
  • Wall strength concerns. If the wall feels hollow, crumbly, or you're drilling into something you weren't expecting, stop. Mounting a heavy towel rail on a compromised wall will end badly.
  • Any doubt at all. A call-out fee is cheaper than a flood, an electrical fire, or a towel rail coming off the wall at 2am.

FAQ

Can I install a towel rail myself?

Yes — if you're comfortable with basic DIY and you understand the bathroom zone and Part P rules. Swapping a like-for-like radiator is straightforward. Running new pipework or hardwiring an electric rail is where the difficulty steps up. If you're not sure, hire a professional. It's not worth the risk.

What height should a heated towel rail be?

The centre of the rail should sit between 1200mm and 1400mm from the floor. This gives enough clearance for standard bath towels to hang without touching the floor, and enough space above for taller rails. If you're replacing a radiator, the existing pipework might dictate the height — in which case, work with what you've got.

Do I need an electrician to install an electric towel rail?

If it plugs into an existing 13A socket that's outside bathroom zones, you can do it yourself. If it needs hardwiring into a fused spur, or if any wiring runs through bathroom zones, you need a NICEIC or NAPIT registered electrician — it's notifiable work under Part P.

Can I replace an old radiator with a towel rail?

Yes, and it's one of the most common upgrades we see. Check the pipe centres first — towel rails are often narrower than panel radiators, so your existing pipework might need adjusting. If the valves line up, it's a straightforward swap. If they don't, you'll need to alter the pipework or use offset connectors.

What IP rating do I need for my bathroom?

Zone 1 requires IPX6 for non-thermostatic elements. Zone 2 is fine with IPX4 for thermostatic elements. IP20 accessories (timers, controllers, fused spurs) must be outside all zones. Check your rail's spec before you buy — we list IP ratings on every product page.

How much does it cost to run a heated towel rail?

At the current average electricity price of 24.67p per kWh, a 150W electric towel rail costs about 3.7p per hour to run. Over a typical 4-hour daily heating window, that's around 15p a day — or about £4.50 a month. Plumbed rails running off your central heating are even cheaper since gas is priced lower per kWh.
