Dual fuel solves this without running the boiler in May just to dry a bath towel. In heating season, your boiler does the work at virtually no extra cost. What Is Included with Every Rail

Every dual fuel towel rail is supplied with the valve hardware needed to connect it to your central heating and electric circuits:

• The heated towel rail (flat bar ladder construction, mild steel, welded)
• Angled valve with integrated T-piece, or a dual fuel ready corner valve with the T-piece built in — depending on the product

Heating elements and timer switches are optional extras — select the element type that suits your bathroom zone and control preference when adding to basket. All rails carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty. Elements are covered for 1 year.

Choosing the Right Element

The element slides into the bottom of the rail and heats the internal fluid independently of the CH circuit. Three options are available:

• Standard element (IPX6) — on/off via fused spur or wall switch. Suitable for Zone 2 bathrooms outside the immediate splash zone.
• Thermostatic element (IPX4) — maintains a set temperature automatically and cuts power when the target is reached. Can be installed in Zone 1.
• WiFi element (IPX4) — schedule and adjust temperature from your phone. Ideal for smart home setups.

Installation: What You Need to Know

Dual fuel installation requires two trades. A plumber connects the 15mm copper compression fittings to your CH flow and return pipes using the supplied valve set. A qualified electrician fits the fused spur and wires the element. The T-piece — either on the angled valve or built into the corner valve — keeps both circuits safely isolated when only one is in use. When running the electric element, close one of the radiator valves as a courtesy: it stops heat dissipating back through the CH pipework and keeps the warmth where it belongs — in the towel rail.

What exactly is a dual fuel towel rail?

It is a heated towel rail that can be powered by your central heating system OR by an independent electric element depending on the season. The T-piece separates the two circuits so you switch between them by closing your radiator valves and turning on the element. One rail, two heat sources, no additional pipework.

Do I still need radiator valves?

The valve set is included with the rail — either an angled valve with T-piece or a dual fuel ready corner valve with the T-piece built in. When switching to electric-only mode in summer you close both valves to isolate the rail from the boiler. We also stock matching radiator valves in Chrome, Black, White and Anthracite.

Can I run both CH and electric at the same time?

You can, but there is no point — it just wastes electricity. The electric element heats the water inside the rail, but if the CH valves are open that heat simply dissipates back through the central heating pipework. Close one of the radiator valves when the element is on and you keep the heat in the towel rail where it is needed.

What wattage element do I need?

A 300W element suits most standard bathroom rails. Larger rails — over 1000mm wide or 1400mm tall — benefit from 400W or 600W for faster warm-up. As a guide, match wattage to roughly 20–25% of the rail BTU output. Call us on 02477 220 780 if you need advice.

Do I need to bleed a dual fuel towel rail?

Yes, when connected to CH mode. The rail fills with water from your central heating circuit and air can become trapped, just like any standard radiator. Bleed it at the bleed valve using a standard radiator key. When running in electric-only mode with valves closed the internal fluid is sealed and does not need bleeding.

Is a dual fuel rail safe for a bathroom?

Yes, provided you match the element IP rating to your bathroom zone. IPX6 elements are suitable for Zone 2 (more than 600mm from shower or bath). IPX4 thermostatic elements can be installed in Zone 1. Your electrician will confirm the zone. All our elements meet UK bathroom safety standards.

Can I convert an existing CH towel rail to dual fuel?

In most cases yes. If the bottom of your existing rail has a standard blanking plug, a dual fuel conversion kit can be retrofitted by a qualified electrician without removing the rail. Check minimum internal height requirements on the kit listing.

How much does it cost to run the electric element?

At 24.67p/kWh a 300W element running 4 hours per day costs approximately 30p per day — around £9 per month. A 600W element at the same usage is roughly £18/month. Significantly cheaper than running central heating for a single bathroom rail.
