Electric Towel Rail & Heating Element FAQ - Expert Answers
Electric Towel Rail & Heating Element FAQ
Expert answers to your installation, troubleshooting, and product questions
Installation Questions
Can I test the heating element before installing it?
NO - NEVER test a heating element dry. This is the most common cause of element failure. The element must be fully submerged in fluid before any power is applied. Testing a dry element, even for a few seconds, will burn it out immediately and void your warranty.
How much fluid should I put in my towel rail?
Fill your towel rail to approximately 87.5% capacity - leave about 12.5% air space at the top. This air cushion is essential for thermal expansion when the fluid heats up. Overfilling can cause leaks and damage.

Do I need an electrician to install my electric towel rail?
Yes. Electric towel rails must be connected to a fused spur by a qualified electrician. This is a legal requirement under UK building regulations (Part P). DIY electrical connections can be dangerous and will void your warranty.
What size fused spur do I need?
Use a 13A fused spur for elements up to 3000W. For most domestic towel rails (150W-600W), a 3A or 5A fuse in the spur is recommended for added protection.
Should I use PTFE tape when installing the element?
Yes. Always wrap PTFE tape around the element thread (clockwise when looking at the thread end) before screwing into the radiator. This ensures a watertight seal.
Troubleshooting Problems
My towel rail is not heating up at all
Check these things first:
- Power supply - Is the fused spur switched on? Has the fuse blown?
- Thermostat setting - Turn the dial to maximum to test
- Wiring - Ask your electrician to verify power is reaching the element
- Element - If power is confirmed but no heat, the element may be faulty
My towel rail trips the RCD/fuse when switched on
This usually indicates:
- A faulty element (internal short circuit)
- Water ingress into the element head
- Incorrect wiring
My towel rail is leaking from the element
Common causes:
- Element not tightened properly
- Missing or damaged O-ring seal
- PTFE tape not applied correctly
- Overfilling caused pressure buildup
Solution: Switch off power and let cool completely. Check the element is hand-tight plus 1/4 turn with a spanner. Verify the O-ring seal is in place and undamaged. Ensure you haven't overfilled (drain some fluid if needed).
My towel rail gets warm but not hot
This is usually normal. Electric towel rails are designed to reach approximately 50-65°C - warm enough to dry towels but safe to touch. If you need higher temperatures:
- Check your thermostat is set to maximum
- Ensure the element wattage is appropriate for your radiator size
- Allow 1-2 hours for full heat-up on first use
The element light is flashing
A flashing indicator light typically means:
- The thermostat has reached temperature and is cycling (normal)
- The element is in standby mode
- There may be an error condition
Check your specific element model's instructions as indicator meanings vary.
Warranty & Returns
What is covered under warranty?
Our heating elements come with a 12-month warranty covering:
- Manufacturing defects
- Element failure under normal use
- Faulty thermostats
Not covered:
- Damage from dry running (testing without fluid)
- Incorrect installation
- Physical damage
- Use with incompatible fluids
How do I make a warranty claim?
To process your warranty claim, please email us with:
- Your order number
- Date of purchase
- Clear photo of the element installed
- Description of the problem
- Confirmation from your electrician that wiring is correct (for electrical faults)
We'll assess your claim within 24-48 hours and dispatch a replacement if approved.
My element failed - do I need to return the whole towel rail?
No. In most cases, we only need to replace the element itself, not the entire radiator. We'll send a prepaid return label for the faulty element and dispatch a replacement.
Product Questions
What wattage element do I need?
General guide based on radiator size:
| Radiator Height | Recommended Wattage |
|---|---|
| Up to 800mm | 150W - 300W |
| 800mm - 1200mm | 300W - 600W |
| 1200mm - 1600mm | 600W - 800W |
| 1600mm+ | 800W - 1200W |
Can I use any fluid in my electric towel rail?
Recommended fluids:
- Inhibited water (water with corrosion inhibitor)
- Specialist radiator fluid
- Pre-mixed glycol solutions
- Plain tap water (causes corrosion)
- Automotive antifreeze (damages seals)
- Oil-based fluids (unless specifically designed for your element)
What's the difference between Standard and Thermostatic elements?
- Standard elements run at full power when on, controlled only by an external timer or switch
- Thermostatic elements have a built-in thermostat dial allowing you to set your preferred temperature. They cycle on/off to maintain that temperature.
We recommend thermostatic elements for most installations as they're more energy efficient.
Safety Information
⚠️ Important Safety Warnings
- Never run the element dry - Always ensure the radiator is filled with fluid before switching on
- Qualified installation only - Must be installed by a qualified electrician
- Do not cover - Keep towels loosely draped, not tightly wrapped around the radiator
- Keep away from water sources - Maintain safe distance from baths and showers (Zone 2 minimum)
- Regular inspection - Check for leaks or damage periodically
Pre-Installation Checklist
Before You Start
- Check element and radiator for transit damage
- Have PTFE tape ready for the thread
- Have a qualified electrician arranged
- Read the instruction manual fully
During Installation
- Fill radiator with fluid FIRST (to 85-90% capacity)
- Apply PTFE tape to element thread
- Hand tighten element + 1/4 turn with spanner
- Have electrician connect to fused spur
- Check for leaks before switching on
First Use
- Switch on at thermostat's lowest setting
- Gradually increase over 30 minutes
- Allow 1-2 hours for full heat-up
- Check all connections for leaks
