What is a bleed valve?

A bleed valve also known as an air release valve is a common component used in towel rails (towel radiators) within heating systems. Over time, air can accumulate in the system, obstructing the flow of hot water and reducing the towel rail's efficiency. The bleed valve is used to expel the trapped air.

Here’s how it works in the context of towel rails:

  1. Improving Heat Efficiency: Air inside the towel rail can prevent hot water from properly circulating resulting in uneven or no heating. By opening the bleed valve you may release the trapped air and allow hot water to circulate freely throughout the towel rail, increasing its heat output.

  2. Easy Maintenance: The air release process is usually done manually with a small key or flathead screwdriver. Simply turn the valve slightly to let the air out, and once water starts coming out, close the valve.

The bleed valve is normally found at the top of the towel rail. Checking and utilising the bleed valve on a regular basis can help to keep the towel rail and heating system running efficiently.
